Scheys Beton combines innovation and sustainability for offering high-performance concrete paving and outdoor solutions. With D-Carb lower-carbon cement, renewable energy, and recycled materials, they are leading the way towards a more sustainable future. We had the chance to interview Sigrid Frederickx, General Manager of Scheys Beton to discuss how the company is embracing sustainable practices, the impact of using D-Carb lower-carbon white cement, and their vision for driving innovation in this sector.

About Scheys Beton

Scheys Beton is a family-owned company specializing in high-quality concrete products, where quality, service, and innovation are at the core of the operations. They acquired the company in 1995, and as the next generation, they continue their parents’ legacy. This ensures that Scheys Beton remains a familial SME committed to delivering cutting-edge concrete solutions.

The company offers a great range of products for gardens and outdoor places: (water-passing) pavers, XXL concrete tiles and gravity walls. Additionally, they are active in the public sector with ground retaining systems and sound walls. Finally, Scheys Beton specializes in shoring slabs for berliner walls and concrete panels for timbered trenches.

What Is Scheys Beton's Vision in the Evolving Landscape of Construction Decarbonization?

Scheys Beton: Our vision is to combine tradition with innovation, focusing on sustainable and high-performance products that meet the evolving needs of the construction industry. "Innovation is our motivation" has always been our motto, and this does not change with the generational transition. On the contrary, innovation is one of Scheys Beton's greatest strengths.

When it comes to walls, we push the boundaries of what’s possible—there’s no wall that can’t be built with our products. Our patented Stackton dry-stack retaining wall system has redefined ground retention with its modular, mortar-free design, offering unmatched flexibility and efficiency. Meanwhile, our newly commercialized sound wall MegaStackton sets a new standard in both noise reduction and ground retention, combining high acoustic performance with structural strength. At Scheys Beton, we don’t just build walls—we innovate them.

How Scheys Beton Advances Decarbonization and Drive Sustainable Production?

Scheys Beton: Sustainability has always been an integral part of our company DNA. We continuously seek ways to reduce our environmental impact, whether through optimizing production processes, sourcing eco-friendly materials, or implementing energy-efficient solutions. Our production facilities and offices are equipped with solar panels, contributing to energy self-sufficiency.

We have also invested considerable effort in developing an ecological, 100% cradle-to-cradle dry-stack retaining wall system. Our Stackton technology is a prime example of our dedication to sustainability, utilizing a significant percentage of recycled materials while maintaining structural integrity. As you can see, sustainability is part of our DNA – and D-Carb cement perfectly aligns with that vision.

Until now, our innovation has primarily focused on the technology behind the product itself, but we can now also innovate through the raw materials and components used in our products. This ensures that we stay ahead in sustainable construction while meeting the growing demands for eco-friendly solutions.

Has Scheys Beton Made Any Investments Toward Transitioning to Low Carbon Production?

Scheys Beton: We have made several strategic investments aimed at sustainable production. One of our key initiatives is the implementation of renewable energy sources, such as solar power, at our production sites. Our production halls and office buildings are equipped with solar panels. Additionally, we have optimized our manufacturing processes to minimize waste and improve material efficiency.

Moreover, we have invested heavily in the development of environmentally friendly construction systems, such as our patented Stackton dry-stack retaining wall system, which incorporates more than 40% recycled materials. By using low-carbon white cement, like D-Carb, we further enhance the sustainability of our products, aligning with our commitment to reducing CO₂ emissions.

How Do Your Low-Carbon Concrete Products Maintain High Performance While Reducing Environmental Impact?

Scheys Beton: Our low-carbon concrete products maintain the same high-performance standards as traditional concrete. The use of D-Carb lower-carbon cement has allowed us to maintain structural durability and strength while reducing CO₂ emissions during production.

Although transitioning to low-carbon materials involves minor adjustments in formulation, we have ensured that product quality remains uncompromised.

From a cost perspective, while initial investments in sustainable materials can be higher, they often result in long-term savings due to improved efficiency, compliance with evolving regulations, and potential eligibility for certain projects. By proactively embracing sustainable solutions, we remain at the forefront of the industry – anticipating stricter environmental regulations and future industry demands.

Where Are Low-Carbon Concrete Products Used, and How Do Customers and Project Owners Rate them?

Scheys Beton: Our low-carbon concrete products are widely used in infrastructure, residential, and commercial construction projects. They are particularly beneficial in public sector projects where environmental impact is a key consideration. Customers and project owners have expressed high levels of satisfaction, not only due to the environmental benefits but also because of the high durability, ease of installation, and aesthetic appeal of our products.

MegaStackton sound walls, for example, are specifically designed to improve the living environment, making them highly suitable for the public market. They excel in sound absorption and noise reduction, are quick to install, and seamlessly integrate into natural surroundings due to their aesthetic (pre-filled gabions) design. Additionally, MegaStackton supports various applications, such as the installation of solar panels on top of the MegaStackton elements, allowing energy to be generated exactly where it is needed: on highways for charging electric vehicles and on railways to power trains—eliminating the need for expensive distribution infrastructure.
